BUREAUCRATIC BURIAL
Living proof that she’s alive

A very-much-alive Doris Temple is recovering from a lung flareup at the Ygnacio Valley
Care Center in Walnut Creek.
Being dead can be a real drag, especially if you’re alive. Just ask Doris Temple,
85, a Navy veteran who learned in January that the government had declared her deceased.
Strongly suspecting an error, she protested, but not before she lost her health insurance
and thousands of dollars in income — Social Security benefits as well as private
insurance and pension payments. All the while, she got letters addressed to “the
estate of Doris Temple,” some of which included condolences. And when she tried
to rent a Walnut Creek apartment last month, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. wouldn’t

WASHINGTON — Declaring “I love numbers,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi secured
the critical imprimatur of the Congressional Budget Office on Thursday as she pulled
Democrats in line for a momentous vote this weekend on a $940 billion overhaul of
the nation’s health care system. President Obama, who has been personally lobbying
fence-sitters, postponed his trip to Australia and Indonesia for a down-to-the wire
vote, set for Sunday, on sweeping legislation that has been more than a year in the
making and has drained his political capital. Despite the complicated parliamentary
maneuvering that will be required to get the

Year passes, pain remains in Oakland police tragedy
I remember March 21, 2009. It was a sunny Saturday under a clear blue sky scrubbed
clean by winter rains. Spring was in full bloom. Shortly after 1 p.m., all hell broke
loose. In what began as a traffic stop, Oakland police Officer John Hege and Sgt.
Mark Dunakin were fatally shot on MacArthur Boulevard when motorist Lovelle Mixon
emerged from his vehicle and opened fire. About two hours later, Mixon, now hiding
in a building and armed with an assault

team entered the apartment. The first anniversary marking the slayings of the four
police officers will be a low-key event in Oakland, but many Bay Area residents,
in some manner or other, will recall in

Scientists for decades have lumped Asians into one homogenous group when studying
conditions like breast cancer and heart disease, leading to false conclusions that
don’t take into account the health disparities among different nationalities, researchers
now say. In fact, subgroups of Asians and Pacific Islanders can face dramatically
different risks for developing certain diseases. One recent study found that Hmong
adults in California have rates of liver and cervical cancer three to four times
higher than those of other Asians and Pacific Islanders, for example. And communities
often vary wildly when it
